Your first visit will be a comprehensive dental exam with our dental hygienist and Dr. Higgins. They will go over your concerns and make general recommendations to get you to optimal dental health. At this appointment we like to take a Panoramic x-ray and Cavity Detecting (Bitewing) x-rays. We may also take photographs of your smile, diagnostic models of existing teeth, or any other appropriate x-rays. You will also be scheduled with our hygienist to bring your teeth and gums to optimum health and if needed.

After Dr. Higgins studies your specific case, you will be given an appointment with him for any necessary dental treatment. Only the most artistic hands should create your work of art. Before beginning treatment, Dr. Higgins will discuss your smile and your concerns. Together you will develop a plan to achieve your desires. Periodontal Disease Management

We want you to understand that Periodontal Disease is progressive and that failure to treat the disease may result in the eventual loss of your teeth. Also we would like you to be aware that evidence now links gum disease to a variety of health concerns including Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, and other degenerative diseases that are life threatening.

Periodontal disease affects 3 out of 4 adults. It is caused by a growing colony of living bacteria called “plaque”. The greatest cause of adult tooth loss is periodontal disease. You may not have noticed any problem, because in the early stages of the disease there is little, if any pain. Without thorough removal, toxins from plaque cause the disease process to continue. With help, gum disease can be treated and controlled.

We make an individualized plan to eliminate infection from your gums and root surfaces. Your Dental Hygienist will perform treatments to help eliminate infection, make recommendations to help you more effectively clean your teeth daily, and guide you in achieving and maintaining good oral health. You will be working closely with your Dental Hygienist.

Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing is the treatment of the diseased root surfaces below the gum line. A routine cleaning emphasizes cleaning teeth above the gum line in a healthy mouth. Root Planing focuses on eliminating tarter and plaque below the gum and detoxifying the root surfaces where the disease occurs. Obtaining smooth roots and flushing out the pockets with a medicated rinse allows for a healthy reattachment of the gums to the root surfaces.

Periodontal treatment recommendations will not cure this disease, but will attempt to control the disease process from causing more destruction. Your dentist and dental hygienist cannot control the disease by themselves.

What we hope to accomplish with Periodontal Disease Therapy is:

Gums that do not bleed. Healthy gums do not bleed!
Gums that are not red, swollen, or tender.
Knowing how to effectively maintain good oral health.
Fresher breath and taste.
Reduced pocket depths.
Control of Periodontal Disease.
